She shacks up with the legendary character actor Bruno Lawrence, in what I believe may have been his last film appearance. He eventually escapes when he uses his mind control abilities with a machine he made in metal work to get his revenge, go off and find his sister. She is adopted into a loving family, but the boy ends up being abused by sadistic foster parents, and spooked by their four daughters, who materialise over him and watch him sleep. The plot: a brother and sister are orphaned and split up when the sister is adopted first. Its attempts at realism also fail, with one-note performances and the constant incursion of the story's supernatural elements, which don't mesh with with the real locations and lack of style on offer. The movie doesn't manage any atmosphere or scares and thus fails as horror, gothic or otherwise. "Jack Be Nimble" is a strange and unpleasant movie, the result of an unsuccessful attempt to mix a whimsical gothic horror story with down-and-dirty social realism. Reviewed by jadavix 4 / 10 Awkward mix of gothic horror and social drama never finds its tone So get gold of this must-see film! But, of course. This is one fine example of how great New Zealand cinema scene is, and I'll without any doubt consider this as a classic but refined gore, which should inspire many. A true classic, and hidden gem! A complete movie of of vibrant colors sick ideas! The use of colors are greater than David Lynch manages in his films, and reminded me in that way of Blue Velvet! You really don't know what you've been missing out before you see this! Go head over heels to get hold of this one! Though it deserves to be seen at a large screen, or preferably in a cinema, though that might be difficult for most. It's brutal, it's beautiful, it's sparkling with splatter and horror ideas. Our film club featured this, and all the viewers were astonished. But Jack will be taking his bloody revenge. This fantastic film is an adventure based upon an old fairy tale with the stepmother and three gruesome step sisters. Reviewed by OJT 10 / 10 A colorful horror adventure about taking revenge! If you have an interest in the more sombre, conceptual side of the horror genre, this is an underrated modern classic, and comes highly recommended. These are, however, minor quibbles, which didn't detract in the slightest from my enjoyment. There were also some heavy-handed edits, and the sound design wasn't as accomplished as the visual aspects of the movie. As I mentioned in passing, the script has its clunky moments and not all the acting matches the quality of the standout roles. This is a film about people whose lives have spiralled out of control and into the dark side, and while the paranormal elements are ever-present they're never the meat of the meal. and thankfully they're the kind of surprised which make you think, not the kind which make you jump! There are very few FX beyond straight-up film techniques and a little fake blood, and that too is to the film's credit. There are more surprises in this film than in the last dozen Hollywood horrors I watched. Mainly, though, it's the ideas which make this shine. Mention must also be made of the blunt, persuasive presence of Bruno Lawrence, bringing to life a character who could easily have been badly mishandled. Some of the performances might perhaps have been a little more fluid but Alexis Arquette (as the titular Jack) and especially Sarah Smuts-Kennedy as Dora are exceptionally honest in their portrayals of a damaged brother and sister. The dialogue is unpretty (sometimes even crude),but direct and often powerful - in many ways watching this was like discovering an unknown early Cronenberg flick, but in place of Cronenberg's cool intellectualism Garth Maxwell has crafted a highly emotional film which isn't afraid to take its viewers into uncomfortable territory. The characters are sharply defined and individual, yet at the same time convincingly complex. There is violence and death, disturbing rather than gory, and an insidious tension which builds slowly and isn't allowed to dissipate until the very end. The plot is straightforward but intelligently thought through and far from simple, resting on the characters and the tragic events in which they're embroiled. The film looks great, using the natural beauty of NZ alongside impressive cityscapes, but also showing us the very ordinary and (of course) the dark and ugly side of both the rural and urban environments. It has everything a quality horror movie needs, including the elements which big-budget and "typical American" horror all too often lack. This low-budget horror film from New Zealand is, for me, a textbook example of why I love the genre. Reviewed by CantripZ 8 / 10 Dark, Beautiful and Exciting

I was a little skeptical about this book since it’s pink and “girly” and I read with my 7year old son and 9 year old nephew. And I would recommend this one to everyone. I love the style and I love how pink everything is.Īll in all, I need more Isadora Moon in my life. I hope they have a very fun week full of glitter and happiness, though without any naughtiness.Īnd of course, I can't forget them, the illustrations are still so cute and fun. The ending had me smile, haha, I am glad that their friendship is still strong. And that she stops lying to her parents, they are so sweet and deserve honesty and truth. I hope that she learned her lesson from the things that happened in this book. She really does need to stand up for herself, say no. I wasn't happy with how Isadora lied to her parents, but I am glad with the ending. Trouble had already started at home, and I knew that it would be full blown chaos at school. Still, instead of saying no, Isadora took the dragon with her to school. Yes, it didn't spit out fire, instead tons of pink and glitter, but it did grow and it did make a terrible terrible mess. However, then she makes a dragon and I just knew that was a terrible idea. What a fun idea, I would have loved to do that when I was little as well. Yes, Isadora should learn to stand up for herself, that is very important, BUT, Mirabelle is older than Isadora and shouldn't abuse that fact and persuade Isadora to do things that Isadora may not want to do.Īt first the magic is pretty fun, I love the idea of them changing themselves to tiny format and then have fun with the slide and the doll house. I was happy to see her again, though my happiness quickly disappeared when she did some not so good things in this book. In this one we see Mirabelle, Isadora's niece, visit for half-term. I was very much curious on how Isadora would get into trouble and how her parents (and school) would react. I just love the Isadora Moon series, they are cute, sugary, glittery, and fun. Isadora get in trouble! Yep, our sweet Isadora gets into big big trouble in this book!Īt first I thought I already read this book when I was at Library #1, but then I found out I hadn't read it. If Isadora had truly learned her lesson, she would have stood up to her cousin and honored her promise to her parents and done "the right thing" and stayed, literally, grounded Yet, Isadora’s cousin convinces Isabelle to take one last flight on the magic dragon before it disappears. I thought it was all handled well, including the eventual confession and consequences, but the ending just blew it, IMO, as it completely undermines the whole message that was just conveyed! :-( Isadora’s parents are, IMO, quite gracious and understanding, but do ground Isabella for a spell, including no flying. They aren’t doing anything truly awful, but Isadora’s conscience is pricked and she knows better… but goes along with the schemes, anyway. Muncaster deftly portrays the thoughts and emotions of a “good kid” who feels roped into trouble-making by a bad influence-in this case, her cousin. This was a four-star for me, until the last few pages. there are definitely some elements that fit well for this season.)Īw, darn. (The books are not centered around Halloween and could be read any time of year, but since Isadora's father is a vampire and they live in a castle, etc. I've read the series out-of-order but hope to get to the rest of them in the next few weeks as they are perfect for someone like me who loves a bit of Halloween fun without the scary-factor. The stories are well-written, the characters all feel well-drawn. The illustrations are full of the most darling details that always make me smile. I adore these Isadora Moon books! They are so charming and fun. One of the quickest ways to add images, text, shapes, or your signature to a PDF is with Smallpdf. There's also an offline editor that runs on Windows, but it isn't free. The online version works in all operating systems. You need one only if you want to save your progress online without downloading the PDF. When finished editing, you can download the PDF to your computer without ever having to make a user account. You can upload your own PDF file, paste the URL to an online PDF, and make your own PDF from scratch. PDFescape lets you delete individual pages from the PDF, rotate pages, crop out parts of a page, reorganize the order of the pages, and add more pages from other PDFs. You also can draw on the PDF, add sticky notes, strikethrough text, put white space over anything you want to disappear, and insert lines, checkmarks, arrows, ovals, circles, rectangles, and comments. The text tool is very customizable so that you can pick your own size, font type, color, alignment, and apply effects such as bolding, underlining, and italics. You can't truly change text or edit images for free using this editor, but you can add your own text, images, links, form fields, etc. It's free as long as the document doesn't exceed 100 pages or 10 MB. It's also available in portable mode to use on a flash drive.Ĭan't edit existing text, unless you pay. You can use PDF-XChange Editor if you're on Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7. There's a comprehensive list of all the free features on the download page. If you use a feature that's not covered by the free version (you're told which ones aren't free when you use them), the saved PDF file will have a watermark attached to the corner of every page. Many of the features are free (like editing the text), but some are not. I tried this with a few applications with lots of forms. One handy feature is the ability to highlight all the form fields so that you can easily spot where you need to fill in. Having said that, I found all the options and tools to be simple to understand, and they're categorized into their own sections for easier management. There are lots of features, so it might seem overwhelming at first. You can save the edited PDF back to your computer or to any of those cloud storage services. You can load PDFs from your computer, a URL, SharePoint, Google Drive, and Dropbox. If you stick to just the free features, however, you can still do some editing to the file and save it back to your computer. If you use a non-free feature, the PDF will save with a watermark on every page. PDF-XChange Editor offers some great tools, but not all of them are free to use. When you're done, you can save back to PDF or choose from various image and video formats. PDFs you want to edit with Canva can't exceed 15 MB or 15 pages, so this isn't ideal if your document exceeds those parameters. Most of my media is on Google Photos, so I was happy to find that I could connect to it (and Dropbox) to easily copy things like images into my PDF. Of course, because this is a full graphic design platform, it has a wealth of other tools so you can also edit images, add shapes, edit and build PDF pages, include charts, etc. You can also add hyperlinks to text and other objects, and special fonts are available to easily type out your signature. Click into any text area to change what the text says and to adjust the font type, size, and color. Unlike most free tools, Canva lets you fully edit text, and you don't need to sign up to do it. While you could create a project from scratch or a template, another way you can use its editing tools is on a PDF. Sejda PDF Desktop runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.Ĭanva is a very capable website for creating unique, high-quality designs. This tool works no matter which operating system you use. For example, the desktop edition supports more font types and doesn't let you add PDFs by URL or from online storage services as the online editor does (which supports Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive).Īnother neat feature is the web integration tool that lets PDF publishers provide a link for their users that they can simply click to automatically open the file in this editor.Īll uploaded files are automatically deleted from Sejda after two hours. There are some differences between the online and desktop versions that you should know about. You can get the desktop version if you'd rather use it that way. Plus, this tool can run entirely in your web browser, so it's easy to get going without having to download any programs. Most editors only let you change the text you add yourself, or they support text editing but then throw watermarks all over the place. Sejda PDF Editor is one of the very few PDF editors that actually lets you edit pre-existing text in the PDF without adding a watermark. Limited to docs with fewer than 200 pages (OCR stops after page 10). They may already feel they have achieved it and therefore do less revision in the run up to exams, potentially causing their grades to decrease. On the other hand, a student who is already working at a grade 5 will also not benefit from this goal. Unrealistic goals lead to demotivation and students may disengage very quickly when they realise their goals are not achievable. However, for students who are working at a grade 2 or below, at this stage achieving a 5 in their exams may be unrealistic. This goal will be useful for a student who is currently working at a grade 4 or maybe 3. Let’s take the example we started with of getting a 5 in GCSE maths. By setting goals in their stretch zone, students have the best chance of being successful and learning a lot along the way. These will be goals that are not so easy that they are sure they will achieve them but also not so difficult that they are almost impossible to achieve. Effective goalsĮffective goals are those that are in a students’ ‘stretch zone’. One simple way that teachers can support students to achieve their goals is to make sure they are setting effective goals. Teachers across the country will be working hard to support their students to achieve those goals, often going over and above to do so. Many students make goals with regards to their academic achievement and at this time of year these often relate to achieving certain GCSE grades. For example, to learn a new language, score more goals for their football team, or do more exercise. Individuals will set goals in lots of different areas of their lives. Setting effective goals supports students with aiming highĪ goal is something that an individual wants to happen, and that they will work towards achieving. This essential skill is about being able to plan effectively - both in relation to organisational goals, as well as personal development targets. What does Aiming High mean?Īiming high is the ability to set clear, tangible goals and devise a robust route to achieving them. In this blog, we’ll take a deeper look into how teachers can support their students to aim high by setting goals in a way that makes them more likely to be achieved. Simply setting a target of getting a 5 in GCSE maths, as many teachers will have experienced, is largely ineffective by itself for the majority of students. Setting goals in itself isn’t a new concept, but our understanding of what makes goal setting effective has developed over time. As we creep towards the exam period, now more than ever teachers will be looking for ways to support their students to do this effectively. The main responsibility that teachers have is to support students to aim high and be successful in the subject that they teach. Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit are the main ones you need to look for. Nowadays a smart home device is expected to work with at least one major smart home platform. Does it work with smart home platforms? If so, do the smart features work well together? That leaves the Video Doorbell 4 as the middle child, with something for both kinds of people, but not necessarily the best value or features around. On the other hand, if you really want to see what a smart video doorbell can accomplish in 2023, the Video Doorbell Pro 2 is unbeatable in terms of smart doorbell features - and especially with the option to use end-to-end video encryption. If you're curious about trying out a video doorbell for the first time, mostly for basic features like live monitoring, two-way talk and so on, a starter device like the Ring Video Doorbell (the 2020 model, or its Wired version) should do what you need. When you're looking for a video doorbell, the most important question isn't "Which one is best?" so much as "Which one is best for me?" All of Ring's video doorbells perform well - and all of them come from the same company, with the same troubling history of facilitating video sharing with police. This is pretty disappointing considering every major competitor can send you package alerts at this point - and considering how important video doorbells can be at protecting packages. Another downside: As of right now, the Ring 4 still can't send you package alerts like the Pro 2 or the Ring (2020). For that, you'll have to either get a separate plug-in chime, or use your Echo devices as a stand-in.Ī few downsides: The Ring 4 has a wide-angle aspect ratio, so you can see things easily side-to-side, but when a visitor approaches the door, their head and feet (or a package, if they leave one) can easily be cut out of frame. The Ring 4 can be used wirelessly with its battery, or it can be wired - though this won't let it use your existing doorbell chime, sadly. The doorbell camera lists for just over $220, offers 1080p resolution, a 160-degree field of view and two-way talk, along with plenty of other goodies like full-color preroll (which captures a few seconds before motion is detected, for added context). In 2021, Ring launched its latest core video doorbell, the Ring 4. Are you looking for a wireless or hardwired option? Do you want to prioritize buying something affordable, or do you want the latest devices with all of the bells and whistles? Ring has a complicated history with privacy and police partnerships, so you might also be wondering if some devices are better at protecting your privacy than others? Yes, shopping for video doorbells can give rise to a lot of questions, so our experts are here to help. Ring has an extensive selection of video doorbells that meet the needs of a wide variety of homes. While Google Nest buzzers and Arlo doorbell cams are great alternatives, many people looking to buy a video doorbell still opt for the industry's biggest brand. Amazon's home security brand has become increasingly popular and has a reputation as one of the best video doorbells on the market. If you're considering upgrading your home security with a video doorbell, Ring has probably crossed your mind. The best Ring doorbells also let you interact with whoever's at the door, even when you're not home. Video doorbells allow you to see exactly who's at your door, and with the ability to record, they become even more useful. If you're on the fence about whether to invest in a video doorbell, let me tell you right away that they're the perfect way to improve your home security. A further reproductive benefit could occur through female mate selection. Meat obtained by males through hunting and scavenging could be traded for sex with females.įemales who aggressively used weapons would have protected themselves and their children better and increased their access to disputed food resources. Weapons would have made hunting more effective. Defence against predators would be enhanced, and opportunities for scavenging would increase when predators could be driven from carcasses. In conflicts between armed hominid communities, those with the most adept warriors would be more likely to prevail. Use of rocks or clubs would provide an advantage in territorial hostilities with unarmed outgroup conspecifics, yielding improved access to breeding females and food, which promote reproductive success. The best throwers and clubbers in a community would rise in the male dominance hierarchy and thereby obtain more breeding opportunities. There are numerous ways that aggressive use of weapons could have led to this result. The behaviour must be able to increase the proportion of genes in the breeding population of those who are most adept at it. The demonstration of a compelling reproductive advantage is essential to any argument that purports to identify a behaviour that leads to evolutionary change. The resulting selection for improved throwing and clubbing prowess, prolonged over millions of years, led to numerous anatomical changes throughout the body, including those that characterize the evolution of the human hand. It is suggested that the tools were hand-held weapons that were hurled or swung as bludgeons at adversaries during disputes, providing the aggressors with advantages that in various ways promoted reproductive success. However, basic questions remain: what kind of tools? In what manner and for what purpose were they used? How did such behaviour provide reproductive advantages sufficient to drive natural selection during the millions of years required to transform the ancestral ape hand into the human hand?Ĭhimpanzee hand, a model for the hand of the hominid ancestor (left), and the human hand.Ī proposal that offers an answer to these questions is provided in the following report. This approach is consistent with evidence that an early hominid (hominin) behaviour was bipedal gait, which would have ‘freed the hands’ for greater use of tools. Although no comprehensive account has been offered, there is general agreement that the anatomical reconstruction of the hand during human evolution was somehow linked with tool behaviour. This striking exception to the primate pattern clearly requires an evolutionary explanation ( Marzke & Marzke, 2000 Fig. In contrast, the human hand has a much larger, more muscular, mobile, and fully opposable thumb combined with fingers that have shortened and straightened. The typical primate hand is characterized by a diminutive thumb in combination with long, curved fingers ( Midlo, 1934). |
